Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Administrator Dr Shahadat Hossain has called for institutionalising youth leadership and participation in disaster risk management, particularly to address hazards such as landslides in the city.
He made the call at a dialogue titled “Institutionalising the Voice and Leadership of Youth in Proactive Disaster Management” at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Chattogram today (5 November).
The dialogue was organised by Young Power in Social Action (YPSA).
Dr Shahadat said trained young volunteers could help disseminate early warnings, raise public awareness and strengthen preparedness at the community level. Their efforts, he said, should be brought under the formal disaster management framework of local government institutions.
He said effective disaster management required more than emergency rescue operations, stressing the importance of proactive preparation and early warning systems.
“Reducing disaster-related damage requires trained young people to help spread early warnings, raise public awareness and strengthen community-level preparedness,” he said.
Engineer Belayet, chairman of the Chattogram Development Authority; Professor Dr Md Al Amin, pro-vice-chancellor (academic) of the University of Chattogram; Dr Md Arifur Rahman, founder and chief executive of YPSA; and Jabed Miadad, a manager at Save the Children, among others, attended the dialogue.
