Prime Minister’s Public Administration Adviser Ismail Zabiullah has been elected vice-chairperson of the 13th General Assembly of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP), which opened in Seoul, South Korea, today (5 November).
Zabiullah, a BNP Standing Committee member who is leading the party’s delegation, delivered his remarks at the first plenary session after the opening ceremony at The Shilla Seoul Hotel. The 13th General Assembly is being jointly hosted by South Korea’s ruling Democratic Party and opposition People Power Party.
Addressing the assembly, he called for stronger democracy, good governance, the rule of law and international cooperation to address global political instability, conflict and a crisis of trust.
He said democracy was not limited to elections but represented a social contract between citizens and those entrusted with state power, grounded in accountability, transparency and respect for fundamental rights.
Referring to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership, Zabiullah said the ruling BNP viewed its electoral mandate as a responsibility to serve people and believed peace should be pursued through dialogue rather than conflict.
Expressing concern over humanitarian crises in Palestine and the Middle East, he called for human dignity to take precedence over geopolitical interests and for international principles to be applied equally.
He also proposed that ICAPP develop mechanisms to prevent political interference across borders and called for a common policy paper to help developing countries address the opportunities and risks posed by artificial intelligence, including its impact on employment and modern warfare.
Zabiullah urged countries to allocate an appropriate share of their GDP to climate action and ensure fairness in climate financing.
He also highlighted the effects of misinformation on young people and called on ICAPP to prioritise youth mental health and strengthen engagement with grassroots political leaders.
Representatives from five Bangladeshi political parties are attending the assembly, which concludes tomorrow. A cultural and historical tour of South Korea is scheduled for the following day.
