The Bangladesh Army’s bomb disposal team has defused three old shells found in imported iron scrap at BSRM’s recycling unit in Baro Awlia, Sitakunda, Chattogram.
The team safely recovered and defused the shells around noon today (4 November) in the presence of police. No untoward incident was reported.
Mohammad Mohinul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Model Police Station, told The Business Standard that the shells were very old and might date back to the Liberation War.
BSRM authorities filed a general diary (GD) with Sitakunda Police Station several days ago after discovering the shells. Following this, police contacted the army’s bomb disposal team yesterday (3 November).
The OC said the shells might have been sold as scrap metal after being mistaken for old iron, but police could not confirm whether they had arrived with the imported scrap.
He added that similar shells had previously been recovered from the Sitakunda hills, although their origin remains unknown.
