Global digital operator VEON has highlighted Banglalink’s transformation from a traditional telecom operator into a broader digital services provider, citing its $2.5 billion investment in Bangladesh, 40 million customers and expanding portfolio of technology-driven services.
For the first time, VEON has held a board meeting in Bangladesh today (3 November), bringing the country’s telecom and emerging digital services market into focus for the group’s global leadership.
Following the meeting, VEON and Banglalink executives met journalists at Crowne Plaza Dhaka Airport on Tuesday to discuss the company’s evolution over more than two decades and its growing ambitions in digital services.
Johan Buse, CEO of Banglalink, outlined the company’s journey from a challenger in the mobile telecom market to a digital operator combining nationwide 4G connectivity with locally developed technology platforms.
According to company figures, Banglalink has invested $2.5 billion in Bangladesh, contributed $4 billion in taxes and created 10,000 jobs since entering the market. Its customer base has grown to 40 million.
The company’s strategy now extends beyond traditional mobile connectivity. Under its “Digital for All” vision, Banglalink is expanding into infotainment, artificial intelligence, digital payments and other technology-driven services, with the stated aim of widening digital inclusion across the country.
The shift was reflected in product demonstrations at the event, where guests explored services and platforms including Starlink-powered direct-to-cell connectivity, RYZE, Toffee, Techvan, Mukto Pay and the newly launched Mukto App.
Banglalink described its Starlink-powered direct-to-cell service as the first of its kind launched by a telecom operator in South Asia. The service is intended to extend connectivity to areas beyond the reach of conventional mobile networks.
The company also showcased Mukto Pay, its newly launched digital payment platform operating as a payment service provider, as part of its expansion into financial technology.
Other initiatives target different segments of the digital economy. Toffee, Banglalink’s infotainment platform, has seven million monthly users, according to the company. RYZE is an artificial intelligence-powered lifestyle brand targeting young consumers, while Techvan focuses on improving access to affordable smartphones.
Product managers demonstrated how the platforms work, giving journalists and other guests an opportunity to experience the services firsthand.
The gathering brought together Augie K Fabela II, founder and chairman of the VEON board; Kaan Terzioğlu, CEO and board member of VEON Group; and Buse.
VEON board members Andrei Gusev, Sir Brandon Lewis, Duncan Perry and Michiel Soeting also attended the event.
Taimur Rahman, chief corporate and regulatory affairs officer of Banglalink, moderated the press meet.
Journalists later questioned the executives about the company’s strategy and its expanding digital ambitions. Terzioğlu and Fabela delivered the closing remarks.
