Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan said that a vested group is attempting to create disorder under the guise of garment workers’ protests in Mirpur, warning that those involved would face action.
He made the remarks while inspecting the Mirpur area this afternoon (3 November) following clashes between garment workers and police.
“A special group is attempting to create anarchy in the name of movement. We will not allow any form of anarchy,” he said.
Questioning the presence of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League members at the demonstrations, Shafiqul Islam claimed that those involved had already been identified, with many holding positions in different political parties.
Law enforcement agencies would take action against them, he added.
Shafiqul also warned against attempts to turn the protests into a political issue.
“Those who attempt to bring back Apa (Sheikh Hasina) in December by creating an unstable situation and trying to spark disorder will be brought to justice,” he said.
Earlier, clashes broke out between garment workers and police around 10am under the Mirpur-11 metro station.
Workers threw bricks at police, who responded by firing tear gas shells and sound grenades. Police detained at least four people during the incident.
