Police have arrested a teacher of a madrasah in Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla over allegations of sexually abusing two residential child students.
The accused, identified as Hafiz Kabir, 35, teaches at Kashinagar Markazul Ulum Hifz Madrasah in Kashinagar Bazar of the upazila. He was arrested from the institution on Sunday night (1 November).
According to madrasah officials and local sources, Hafiz joined the institution around a month ago. Soon after joining, he allegedly began sexually abusing two residential students of the Hifz section by luring them with various promises and threatening them.
The children had kept the matter secret out of fear of social stigma and threats to their lives. As the alleged abuse intensified recently, they eventually informed their family members.
After the allegations came to light, angry guardians and local residents gathered at the madrasah premises on Sunday afternoon and staged a protest, demanding exemplary punishment for the accused teacher. They also informed the police.
A special police team subsequently raided the madrasah and arrested Hafiz that night.
Two separate rape cases have been filed with Chauddagram Police Station in connection with the allegations. As the fathers of both children live abroad, one child’s uncle and the other’s grandfather filed the cases.
The teacher was shown arrested following the filing of the cases.
Chauddagram Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Arif Hossain said today that police arrested the teacher immediately after receiving the allegations.
“Following the filing of the cases, he was sent to jail on Monday,” he said.
