Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have seized 12 buses operated by Itihas Paribahan after a female student accused a bus helper of harassment and inappropriate behaviour.
The students detained the buses this afternoon (2 November), demanding action against the staff member over the alleged misconduct.
The student, who belongs to the university’s 54th batch, said she boarded a bus on Sunday (1 November) to travel home from campus.
However, amid protests by garment workers, her family members called and asked her to return to the campus.
She later crossed the road and boarded an Itihas Paribahan bus.
The student alleged that although the designated fare for students travelling from Hemayetpur to Jahangirnagar University is Tk10, the bus conductor charged her Tk20.
She further alleged that the conductor asked her to get off while the bus was still moving instead of stopping at her intended destination.
When she told him she would get off only after the bus stopped, the conductor allegedly behaved rudely and attempted to touch her.
The student said the conductor backed off after she screamed. Even after she got off the bus, the staff member allegedly hurled abusive remarks at her and another person accompanying her.
JU Proctor Professor Dr Abdul Halim said the university authorities had summoned the bus owner and the helper accused in the incident to discuss the matter.
He said the student wanted the staff member to apologise to her and refrain from similar behaviour towards any female student in the future.
