The government has sent Kazi Mizanur Rahman, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Dinajpur, on compulsory retirement over allegations of an extramarital relationship and sexual misconduct involving the wife of a police constable.
The decision was announced in a government notification issued today (31 October), signed by Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry’s Discipline-1 Branch Manzur Morshed Chowdhury on behalf of the president.
According to the notification, Kazi Mizanur Rahman served as an Assistant Police Commissioner in the Tejgaon Traffic Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) from 14 July 2020 to 6 February 2023.
The notification said Rahman became acquainted with the wife of a constable serving in Barishal Metropolitan Police through Facebook in April 2022.
Taking advantage of her husband’s illness, he allegedly gained her trust by making various assurances, including claiming to have good connections with the home minister and promising to arrange medical assistance for her husband.
After developing a relationship with the woman, the ASP allegedly took her to a friend’s residence and forced her into a sexual relationship against her will, the notification said. It added that they subsequently had sexual encounters at different locations on several occasions.
The matter came to light after the constable obtained videos and photographs of the two, reportedly damaging the couple’s marital relationship.
As the relationship between Rahman and the woman later deteriorated, she filed a case against him with the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in 2023.
The Home Ministry notification said the alleged relationship and misconduct involving a police officer and the wife of another member of the force had severely tarnished the image of the police.
Considering the conduct to constitute misconduct, the government decided to send Rahman on compulsory retirement.
