An eight-year-old boy died after being found hanging inside his family’s rented home in Dhaka’s Kathalbagan area yesterday (30 October), with his family suspecting suicide.
Abu Hasan was taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition around 7pm, where doctors declared him dead.
His father, Islam Uddin, told reporters at the hospital that their family originally came from Astagram upazila in Kishoreganj and currently lived on the fourth floor of a rented building on Free School Street in Kathalbagan.
Islam Uddin works as a day labourer, while Abu Hasan’s mother, Tasrin Begum, works as a domestic help. The couple have three children, and Abu Hasan was a Class III student at a local school.
According to his father, both parents left for work in the morning, leaving their three children at home.
When Tasrin returned in the afternoon, she found the two younger children in one room and Abu Hasan in another room with the door locked.
After repeatedly calling him without getting a response, she forced the door open and found him hanging, the family said.
They immediately took him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The family suspects that Abu Hasan died by suicide. His father said the boy had previously displayed similar behaviour, but family members had intervened.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the body had been kept in the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Kalabagan police are investigating the incident.
