The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has taken Shahriar Reza Dwip, a close acquaintance of former Bangladesh Air Force flight lieutenant KM Tahsif Souri, into custody for questioning over Souri’s death.
Dwip was taken from a residence on Babar Road in the capital’s Mohammadpur area last night (29 October).
A PBI Dhaka Metropolitan North official told The Business Standard that Dwip was brought in for questioning to collect information, as the two had been together before Souri went missing.
“We are verifying some of the information he provided, including where they went together,” the official said.
Dwip reportedly spent around five and a half hours with Souri before he went missing.
On the evening of 27 October, Souri left home after telling his mother, “Dwip is coming; I will go and talk to him.” He did not return home afterwards.
His body was recovered from the Turag River near Rajabari Ghat in Uttarkhan on the afternoon of 28 October.
CCTV footage from the garage beneath Souri’s residence captured Dwip arriving on a motorcycle at 6:24pm on 27 October.
A short while later, Souri came down from the apartment building and met Dwip in the garage. The footage shows the two shaking hands and talking before leaving separately on their motorcycles at 6:31pm.
According to Dwip’s account, they went to a workshop to have some work done on their motorcycles and later had dinner together at a restaurant in the Ashkona area of Uttara.
Dwip claimed that they parted ways in the House Building area of Uttara between 11:30pm and midnight, after which he returned home.
He also claimed that he did not know where Souri went after they separated.
The PBI is questioning Dwip as part of its investigation into the circumstances surrounding Souri’s death.
Tahsif’s name was linked to the recording and publication of the video showing Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana boarding a helicopter to get to the aircraft that took them to India.
