Police recovered the body of a 75-year-old woman from her home in Chattogram’s Majhirghat area yesterday (28 October). The woman, Noor Nahar Begum, had reddish injury marks on her face. Two of her mobile phones were also missing.
Sadarghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ekram Ullah confirmed the matter to The Business Standard, saying, “The back door of the house was open, and reddish injury marks were found on the woman’s face. Two of her mobile phones were missing.”
The OC said police were investigating the incident. The cause of death would be confirmed after the post-mortem report.
Police probe possible political links
According to police and local sources, Noor Nahar’s younger son left for work in the morning. His pregnant wife was staying at her parental home. Noor Nahar was therefore alone for most of the day.
Several tenants lived in three rooms near the house’s rear gate. They included a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver and garment workers.
In the evening, the tenants noticed that the rear gate was open. They entered the house and found Noor Nahar dead on her bed. The bedroom door was also open. They then informed the police.
Noor Nahar had been suffering from breast cancer for a long time. She also had various age-related illnesses. Her husband had died earlier. Her elder son died of blood cancer around 45 days ago.
Police are also investigating her political affiliations. Family members said she did not hold any position in the Awami League.
However, OC Ekram Ullah said she sometimes accompanied Awami League MPs and senior party leaders during visits to the area. She did so as a leader of an organisation called “Nari Shakti”.
Police have yet to establish whether her political affiliations were linked to her death.
The body was sent to the morgue at Chattogram Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police said the family planned to file a case. Legal proceedings are ongoing.
