Melanie C is opening up about how she finally embraced her Spice Girls’ identity almost two decades after her girl band announced the indefinite hiatus.
Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, Melanie, who became famous as Sporty Spice, explained how she never fully accepted this part of her identity until the group’s 2019 reunion tour.
“When we did the stadium shows, it just finally hit home. I’m thinking, ‘Oh, my God, how does a 40-something jump around as Sporty Spice to ‘Wannabe’?’ But as soon as we started rehearsing, it was just there: Sporty Spice isn’t somebody I become. It’s within me,” she told the outlet.
“I really made peace with being a Spice Girl every day,” she continued. “Even when I’m onstage as a solo artist, I have to embrace the Spice Girl in me because she never goes away. She’s always there, and I felt so much more comfortable.
The 52-year-old singer further noted, “I think as a young person, a lot of us make the mistake of looking outside to discover who we are when we’re always there.”
During the conversation, Melanie chose not to comment on rumors of another Spice Girls tour.
But she revealed her favorite song she enjoys performing with her Spice Girls.
Melanie shared, “It’s funny because what I used to call the silly songs — a song like ‘Wannabe’ or ‘Spice Up Your Life’ — they’re the ones that really take the roof off. They’re the ones that people just go nuts for.
“So, I think for the experience of that and seeing other people’s joy, it would have to be ‘Wannabe’ or ‘Spice Up Your Life’.”
It is pertinent to mention that Spice Girls members, including Melanie, Victoria Beckham, Geri Horner, Mel B, Emma Bunton, announced their band’s indefinite hiatus in December 2000 to focus on their solo careers.
The group performed together for a final time as a five-piece at the London Summer Olympics closing ceremony in 2012.
