A Dhaka court today (27 October) sent Diamond World Managing Director Dilip Kumar Agarwala to jail after his remand in a case over the alleged shooting of a student during the 2024 July Uprising.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain passed the order, said prosecution division Sub-Inspector Helal Uddin.
The student, A Jabbar, was shot in front of BNS Centre on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in the capital’s Uttara area on 5 August 2024, according to the case complaint.
Earlier in the day, the case’s investigation officer, Uttara West Police Station Sub-Inspector Sumon Mia, produced Dilip before the court and sought an order to keep him in jail after the remand ended.
The court granted the application. No lawyer appeared for Dilip during the hearing.
On 19 October, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Dilip from a residence in the capital’s Banani area.
The following day, a court granted him one day’s remand in a money laundering case under the Money Laundering Prevention Act involving alleged smuggling worth Tk678.19 crore. After completing that remand, he was sent to jail on 21 October.
He was subsequently placed on remand in the attempted murder case over the alleged shooting of Jabbar.
The Jabbar shooting case
According to the complaint, Jabbar was shot in front of BNS Centre on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway in Uttara West on 5 August 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement.
He remained under hospital treatment until 26 September that year.
After his condition improved, Jabbar filed the attempted murder case with Uttara West Police Station on 27 March 2025.
The case names 50 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and lists another 100-150 unidentified accused.
Earlier arrests
On 3 September 2024, the then Rapid Action Battalion arrested Dilip over allegations of gold and diamond smuggling, fraud, forgery and money laundering. The arrest followed an operation at Diamond World’s office in the capital’s Gulshan area.
He was later shown arrested in a case over the killing of teenager Hridoy Ahmed in Badda during the July Uprising.
Police questioned him on remand in that case before he was granted bail.
