A Chhatra Dal leader has been relieved of his party position after a video showing him and his associates assaulting a Swechasebak Dal leader inside the emergency department of Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital went viral on social media.
The incident took place yesterday (25 October), while the organisational action against the accused was announced today, according to a press release.
The victim, Jewel Hossain Nirob, senior vice-president of the Swechasebak Dal unit in Ward No 1 of Lakshmipur municipality, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Dhaka for better treatment.
The video shows Jewel being beaten with a chair, punched and kicked inside the hospital’s emergency department. The incident has reportedly raised concerns among doctors and hospital staff about their safety.
According to hospital authorities and people familiar with the incident, a dispute over the purchase and sale of a mobile phone led to a clash between Shahid and Jewel on Sunday afternoon.
Jewel went to the hospital for treatment, but Shahid and his associates attacked him outside the facility. He then entered the emergency department in an attempt to escape the assault.
Shahid followed him inside and continued beating him with a chair, punches and kicks, leaving him bloodied.
Shahid could not be reached for comment despite several attempts to contact him.
Lakshmipur district Chhatra Dal Convener Abul Barakat Sourav and Member Secretary Hasibur Rahman Ovi said Shahid had previously served as president of Dalal Bazar Degree College Chhatra Dal but currently held no formal position in that unit.
However, he had been involved in municipal Chhatra Dal politics, and organisational action had been taken against him, they said.
Hospital Resident Medical Officer Arup Pal described the attack as regrettable, saying CCTV footage had clearly captured the incident.
The hospital authorities had informed police so that legal action could be taken, he added.
“We are also worried following the incident,” he said.
Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Wahid Parvez said no written complaint had been filed over the incident.
Police would take legal action if a complaint was received, he added.
