For Beyoncé, it seems she sought to build a reputation beyond music — Cécred, a haircare brand, for example.
The brand offered her an interest in entrepreneurship, but to set the record straight, she didn’t build Cécred to cash in on her celebrity status.
“I’m the founder, visionary, and sole investor—not the face or model for this brand,” she plainly said.
In her latest interview with i-D Magazine, the 35-time Grammy Award-winning artist said her vision behind founding Cécred is to create solutions for genuine haircare problems and make the results so airtight that even her critics would become customers.
“I had a vision to build something that solved real problems and performed so incredibly that the people who can’t stand my music still use Cécred, haaaa! because it works,” she jokingly said.
Moving beyond the cheeky challenge, Beyoncé drew in her mother – with whom she developed the haircare line.
“My mother and I poured decades of experience, tradition, and love into Cécred, so seeing our community grow across every ethnicity, texture, generation, and gender is so fulfilling,” she added.
However, building Cécred was not without challenges. Initially, Beyoncé revealed, “In the beginning, it took some conditioning from the world’s perception of how to launch a brand founded by someone like me.”
That said, her message is plain. Buy Cécred not necessarily because you like Beyoncé’s music; the hair brand has its own merits and can build its own client base.
