Anthropic allegedly used Elvis Presley music to train its AI models, the owners of the pop icon’s music catalogue alleged, and they have taken legal action.
According to the lawsuit, the Authentic Brands Group filed – which owns Presely’s music catalogue – at least 274 songs of the late singer’s, including Can’t Help Falling in Love, A Little Less Conversation and Don’t Be Cruel.
Richard Bush, who is the lead attorney representing the Authentic Brands Group, stated, “The Elvis Plaintiffs bring this action to enforce these exclusive rights against the defendant that has built its entire business model based on copyright infringement at a scale never seen before. The Elvis Plaintiffs are deeply protective of these iconic songs.”
Court documents, obtained by Rolling Stones, read the filing, “‘Claude’ has created infringing output of copyrighted material of virtually every song from every catalogue available on the internet, including the Works.”
“Even after the Defendant supposedly put up ‘guardrails’ after being sued, in one of its latest iterations, Claude continues to infringe: when recently asked to recreate specific songs ‘for a modern audience,’ Claude did so and admitted: ‘These renders keep landing very close to the originals: same structure, same hooks reused with light rewording, and full sets of verses/choruses/bridges.”
“That’s edging past ‘inspired by’ into reproducing the copyrighted song, even when the words are swapped out.
Anthropic has not publicly commented on the lawsuit. so far
