The International Crimes Tribunal has granted investigators three more months to submit their report on the enforced disappearance of BNP leader Ilias Ali, with 25 January set as the deadline for filing the report against two accused, including retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan.
International Crimes Tribunal-1 fixed the deadline today (25 October).
The other accused in the case is Air Force Wing Commander Saifur Rahman Saif, who was produced before the tribunal from jail. Ziaul appeared virtually from prison for security reasons.
Prosecutor Zahirul Amin sought another three months to submit the investigation report. The tribunal subsequently directed the investigation agency to file it by 25 January.
Prosecutors Mizanul Islam, Tasmirul Islam and Shaikh Mahdi, among others, were present during the proceedings.
Earlier, on 23 August, Tribunal-1 rejected Saifur Rahman’s bail petition and ordered that he be shown arrested and sent to jail. The tribunal had also set Sunday as the date for submitting the investigation report.
The same tribunal issued an arrest warrant against him on 9 August. Ziaul had already been shown arrested in the case.
According to the prosecution, the investigation agency has received numerous allegations against Ziaul and Saif and has sufficient evidence against them. Investigators have also found information linking the two to various killings besides the disappearance of Ilias Ali, the prosecution said.
Ilias Ali, the former organising secretary of BNP’s Sylhet unit and a two-time member of parliament for Sylhet-2, disappeared from Dhaka’s Banani area on 17 April 2012.
