A Dhaka court today (23 October) sent former social welfare minister Dipu Moni to jail after she completed a two-day remand in a case over the killing of rickshaw-puller Hafizul Shikder in the capital’s Badda area during the 2024 July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan passed the order.
Earlier in the day, the investigation officer, Inspector Riduanul Haque of the Criminal Investigation Department’s Dhaka Metro North unit, produced Dipu Moni before the court after her remand and sought an order to keep her in jail.
Kamal Uddin, a sub-inspector of the police prosecution division, confirmed the matter.
He said the investigation officer had questioned Dipu Moni for two days with the court’s permission before seeking an order to send her to jail.
The investigation officer had initially sought five days’ remand to question her. After hearing the application, the court rejected her bail plea and granted two days’ remand.
According to the case statement, Hafizul Shikder, 28, was waiting for passengers in the Pragati Sarani area of Badda on 20 July 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement, when he was shot.
The complaint alleges that a bullet fired by the accused while suppressing the movement entered his body near the left ribs and exited through his right armpit.
On 21 August 2024, Hafizul’s father, Abubakar Shikder, filed the case with Badda Police Station, naming ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 178 others and accusing another 300–400 unidentified people.
