Rumeen Farhana, MP for Brahmanbaria-2, was involved in a heated exchange with the officer-in-charge of Sarail Police Station in Brahmanbaria last night (22 October), telling him that he had been a staunch Awami League supporter.
The incident took place in the OC’s room at the police station.
According to sources, Rumeen had requested security during visits to Durga Puja mandaps during the recently concluded Durga Puja celebrations. However, OC Monzur Kader Bhuiyan did not arrange security for her.
Rumeen went to the police station around 8pm last night to question the lack of security and inquire about allegations of irregularities and corruption against the OC. She remained in his room until 9pm.
During the exchange, a man accompanying Rumeen alleged that the OC had taken Tk30,000 from him as a bribe.
The OC denied the allegation and claimed that Rumeen had coached the man to bring him to the police station.
At one point, Rumeen told the OC, “You were a big Awami League supporter. I know your history, sir. Anyway, I am not concerned about that.”
Asked about Rumeen’s allegations, OC Monzur said the MP had arrived at the police station with hundreds of people and created a disturbance. He alleged that she had brought some people and coached them to make inappropriate remarks.
He also said she had accused him of taking money from brick kilns, adding that all the brick kilns in the haor areas were underwater.
The OC said security arrangements had been made across the police station’s jurisdiction during Durga Puja, but it had been difficult to assign a dedicated police team to Rumeen personally at the time.
Rumeen said the OC had told her that, as an elected MP, people would provide her security. “That is why you can see people around me providing security. I need security,” she said.
She also alleged that the OC faced numerous corruption allegations, including taking money from soil excavation and brick kilns.
Describing the area as prone to clashes, she alleged that police arrived only after tensions had subsided following clashes. She said she had gone to the police station to seek answers about these issues and added that the OC’s behaviour towards her was unacceptable for an elected MP.
Repeated attempts to contact Superintendent of Police Md Jalal Uddin Fahim for comment went unanswered.
