Chattogram City Corporation will build a 15,000-square-foot playground at Madarbari Balur Math in the port city, along with a road and a walkway, Mayor Shahadat Hossain has said.
He announced the plan today (22 October) while inspecting the site and speaking with local residents and community leaders.
The proposed playground will measure 150 feet in length and 100 feet in width, he said.
“After taking the oath as mayor, I pledged to establish 41 playgrounds across the 41 wards of Chattogram city. As part of fulfilling that commitment, I have selected this open ground in Madarbari,” Shahadat said.
He said the area had long suffered from a shortage of playgrounds, depriving children, adolescents and young people of opportunities to participate in sports.
The mayor said providing adequate sporting facilities was essential to keeping young people away from drugs, crime and juvenile gang activity.
He also said no one would be allowed to encroach on the land designated for the playground, while those with legally owned plots would retain their property.
Shahadat said the city corporation had completed development and preparation work on 11 playgrounds as part of its plan to establish one in each of the city’s 41 wards.
These include Halishahar H Block Ground, Bahurupi Ground, Firozshah Ground, Halishahar S Block Ground and BDR Ground.
Development work is under way at Halishahar Shishu Park Ground, Haji Mohammad Mohsin College Ground, Bakalia Stadium and Bakalia School Ground, while work at Agrabad Jamburi Ground is nearing completion.
The city corporation is also preparing development project proposals (DPPs) and completing other necessary procedures for playgrounds in the remaining wards, he added.
Among those present during the inspection were former Chattogram Metropolitan BNP general secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar, former councillor Zainal Abedin, Mozammel Haque, Ziaur Rahman Zia, Md Ali, Mostafizur Rahman Mostak and Yasin Arafat, along with other local leaders.
