A Dhaka court has granted a police petition to show former law minister Anisul Huq and former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak arrested in an attempted murder case filed over a driver losing his left eye during the July Uprising in 2024.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order today (18 October) after a hearing.
The case concerns Mamun, 25, a driver shot in the left eye and other parts of his body during the July Uprising in the capital’s Jatrabari area. Earlier, on 30 September, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Awlad Hossain of Jatrabari Police Station, filed a petition seeking to show Anisul and Palak arrested in the case.
According to the petition, both are currently in jail. The petition alleged that they actively worked on behalf of the Awami League regime to suppress the 2024 student-led movement. It further stated that investigators found preliminary evidence of their involvement and that showing them arrested in the case was necessary for a fair and impartial investigation.
Lawyers for the accused opposed the petition, while the prosecution argued in favour of it. After hearing both sides, the court granted the petition.
According to the case details, the plaintiff and his friends, including Hossain, Khokon and Arif, joined the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Jatrabari from around 9am on 18 July 2024. At around 3pm, while protesters were on the flyover in front of Jatrabari Police Station, gunfire was directed at them, the complaint alleges. Mamun sustained gunshot wounds to several parts of his body, including his left eye and head. He was initially taken to Kajla Islamia Hospital in Jatrabari and later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
After three days of treatment, his left eye condition deteriorated, prompting his transfer to the National Institute of Ophthalmology. The complaint states that his left eye was eventually rendered completely non-functional.
Police arrested Anisul in the Sadarghat area of Dhaka on 13 August 2024. He was later shown arrested in a murder case filed at New Market Police Station and has since been detained in connection with various cases.
Palak was arrested on 15 August 2024 in the Nikunja residential area under Khilkhet Police Station while in hiding. He was initially arrested in a case filed with Paltan Police Station and has since remained in custody in connection with various cases.
