A tree plantation drive in Patenga, near Shah Amanat International Airport, saw around 20 student volunteers from the Asian University for Women (AUW) and Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) officials plant 500 palmyra palm seeds and date palm trees yesterday (17 October) to promote urban greenery and environmental conservation.
The plantation programme, held yesterday, was organised under AUW’s Green Bangle Project in collaboration with Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) and the university’s SLC project, according to a press release.
The programme aimed to expand greenery along the airport corridor, a key gateway to Chattogram, through roadside plantations and the protection of existing vegetation.
The initiative carried the message: “Plant trees, protect the city.”

Dr Mosae SelvaKumar Paulraj, director of Environmental Science and Biological Science at AUW and lead researcher on palmyra trees, and Miftahul Jannat, coordinator of the AUW SLC project, participated in the initiative.
Pronoy Chakma, deputy secretary in Chattogram, and Architect Tasnuva Chowdhury, representing Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), also attended.
Speaking at the programme, Pronoy Chakma highlighted Chattogram City Corporation’s efforts to build a clean, safe and healthy city, emphasising the importance of tree plantation in urban beautification and environmental protection.
He noted that global warming, industrial development and changing weather patterns pose growing environmental challenges, underscoring the need to protect nature for future generations.
He welcomed AUW students’ participation and expressed interest in further collaborative plantation initiatives.
Organisers said the initiative reflected the broader vision of Green Chattogram, promoting environmental protection alongside urban development.
They also stressed that the plantation’s long-term success would depend on suitable growing conditions, seed germination, protection and regular monitoring.
Through the Green Bangle Project, AUW encourages students to engage in environmental conservation beyond the university campus and work with local authorities to improve the city’s environment.
