Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam convened an emergency syndicate meeting online after returning to the Circuit House from treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, but only six of the body’s 15 members attended.
The 145th emergency syndicate meeting was held virtually at 6pm yesterday (16 October), with the vice-chancellor presiding from the Chattogram Circuit House.
The meeting decided to recommend that the Ministry of Education form a high-powered committee to resolve the ongoing deadlock at the university.
Although the vice-chancellor’s office confirmed the attendance of six syndicate members, their identities could not be independently confirmed from the information provided. The vice-chancellor did not respond when asked to identify those present.
Under the meeting’s decisions, the university administration will arrange a joint discussion involving local public representatives and representatives of students, teachers, officers and employees to restore a normal academic environment on campus.
The university will also recommend the formation of a neutral, high-powered committee to the Ministry of Education. The committee would review the views of all concerned parties and propose a long-term, sustainable solution.
University urges stakeholders to resume classes
According to the meeting’s decisions, the ongoing impasse is seriously disrupting students’ academic lives and creating a risk of session backlogs.
Considering the overall interests of the university, the quality of education and students’ futures, the meeting urged students, teachers, officers and employees to return to regular classroom-based academic activities immediately.
It also stressed the need for coordinated discussions with all concerned parties to restore a normal campus environment and mutual trust.
Shutdown continues over appointment of VC
On 21 September, the Ministry of Education replaced Professor Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem with Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam as Cuet vice-chancellor.
Students began a complete shutdown on 22 September in protest against the decision. Teachers, officers and employees have also been observing work abstentions over the same demand.
As a result, classes, examinations and other academic activities at the university remain suspended.
