A Dhaka court has ordered that former Jamalpur-1 lawmaker Md Nur Mohammad, 56, be shown arrested in an attempted murder case over the shooting of a man during the 2024 July Uprising.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Junaid passed the order today (11 October), following an application by the investigation officer of the case filed with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station.
Nur Mohammad was already in jail after being arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from a house in Gulshan on 27 June in a separate case under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
He was sent to jail on 1 July after a three-day remand in that case.
In the latest case, Sub-Inspector Md Mahfuzur Rahman of Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station, the investigation officer, produced Nur Mohammad before the court and sought an order to show him as arrested.
The application said the order was necessary for the investigation and that Nur Mohammad could go into hiding and hamper the probe if released on bail.
Public Prosecutor Harun-Or-Rashid confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement, Jewel took part in a procession of the anti-discrimination student movement in Dhaka’s Tejgaon Industrial Area on 3 August 2024.
He was seriously injured after being shot allegedly by the accused. After receiving treatment for an extended period, he filed the case with the police station.
The order means Nur Mohammad has now been formally shown arrested in the attempted murder case while remaining in custody in the separate case.
