Police have arrested two people in connection with the stabbing of a local BNP leader in the capital’s Adabor area over a dispute involving the household waste collection business.
The victim, Md Bashir, 47, president of the BNP’s No 1 unit under Ward 29 in Adabor, was hacked on Road No 10 around 10pm yesterday (8 October).
A case was filed with Adabor Police Station, naming eight people and accusing another seven or eight unidentified individuals.
Confirming the matter today (9 October), Adabor Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahidul Islam Jahangir said, “We have arrested two individuals, Monir and Rabbi, in connection with the incident. Their names were not mentioned in the case filed.”
“We have initially learned that the BNP leader was attacked over a dispute involving the waste collection business. The victim has filed a case, and operations to arrest the others are ongoing,” the OC added.
Bashir’s son Sifat Ullah Hridoy told The Business Standard that his father is receiving treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and received seven stitches on his head.
According to Hridoy, people associated with Emon Munshi, the purported brother-in-law of Pappu, described as a top extortionist in Mohammadpur, carried out the attack over the dispute.
Emon Munshi and his associates, working with activities-banned Awami League members, had been charging households excessive fees for waste collection.
Building owners assigned his father responsibility for managing waste collection after deciding to exclude the group, triggering a dispute between the two sides. The family had filed a general diary with the police a few days before the attack.
CCTV footage of the incident shows Bashir running into the basement of a building, followed by four men who enter and assault him. One of the attackers appears to be carrying a machete, while another is holding an iron rod.
Bashir later filed a case, naming eight people, including Emon Munshi, and accusing another seven or eight unidentified individuals.
The other named accused are Md Roman, Imran, Md Sagar, Md Badal, Md Sajal, Md Ahidul Islam and Md Hazrat.
Police said investigations were ongoing and efforts to arrest the remaining accused were continuing.
