Four people have been arrested with firearms, ammunition and a list of alleged extortion targets during a police raid in the remote hilly area of Jungle Salimpur in Chattogram.
The operation was conducted yesterday (8 October) afternoon in Bahadur Ghona, about three kilometres from the Alinagar camp of Sitakunda Police Station, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md Junayet Kawsar in a press release issued this morning.
The arrestees are Md Russell, 30, Md Morshed, 33, Md Babu, 32, and Md Sabbir, 32. According to the police, they are from different areas of Chattogram and Brahmanbaria and had been living in various parts of the Chhinnamul area of Jungle Salimpur.
The raid was conducted based on confidential information under the leadership of the officer-in-charge of Sitakunda Police Station, following instructions from Superintendent of Police Md Masud Alam.
Members of the police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Special Response Battalion (SRB) took part in the operation.
Police recovered a shotgun, a Chinese pistol, nine lead bullets, six cartridges, a spear-like weapon, four Android mobile phones, a power bank and a notebook containing a list of alleged extortion targets.
Additional SP Junayet said one suspect pointed a firearm at police during the operation, but no exchange of fire took place. Police brought the situation under control using tactical measures and recovered the weapons.
He said Russell had three previous cases filed against him under the Arms Act, while Morshed had two robbery cases and one arms case against him. Police are also investigating the alleged criminal activities of the other two arrestees.
Preliminary information suggests that the four were involved in extortion and other criminal activities in Jungle Salimpur, he added.
Asked whether the arrestees were linked to either of the two criminal groups active in the area, the additional SP said operations were not conducted against any specific group. Police act whenever they receive information about the whereabouts of criminals, he said.

Regarding the continued criminal activities in Jungle Salimpur despite repeated raids, Junayet claimed that the situation has improved compared with the past.
He said outsiders had previously faced restrictions on entering the area, while journalists covering events there had been attacked and had their cameras snatched. Such incidents are no longer occurring, he claimed.
He added that eliminating criminal activities is an ongoing process and that it is not possible to bring all offenders to justice in a single day. Police will continue operations to bring them under the law in phases, he added.
