Police dispersed a protest rally with batons in the capital today (8 October) as several organisations protested against the signing of a concession agreement with UAE-based DP World to operate Chattogram port’s New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT).
The concession agreement between Chattogram Port Authority and DP World was signed at around 3:30pm at the Invest Bangladesh office in Dhaka’s Agargaon.
The agreement allows DP World to operate the terminal for 15 years.
In protest against the agreement, activists and leaders of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Basad) and several other organisations gathered in front of the Invest Bangladesh office around 2pm.
Police dispersed the protesters with batons at around 2:45pm.
The protesters were opposing the decision to hand over the operation of the NCT to the UAE-based company.
