A Dhaka court has granted bail to retired Major General Golam Mohiuddin Chowdhury in a case filed over an alleged attack, vandalism and looting at the New Gini Properties housing project in the capital’s South Manikdi area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the bail order yesterday (4 October), said Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Tarekur Rahman today (5 October).
The court granted Mohiuddin bail until the next scheduled hearing on 28 October upon a Tk2,000 bond.
The court passed the order after the case’s investigating officer, DB Inspector Jehad Hossain, produced him before the court following the completion of his three-day remand and sought an order to keep him in jail.
Mohiuddin’s lawyer sought bail during the hearing.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Mohiuddin from a residence in Segunbagicha under Ramna Police Station on 30 September.
The next day, a Dhaka court granted police a three-day remand to question him in the case.
According to the case statement, a group of around 50 people entered the New GiniĀ Properties project area on 26 September and allegedly attacked people there with firearms, machetes, knives and sticks. Several people were injured in the incident, it said.
The attackers allegedly looted cash, laptops, computers, cameras and other equipment and vandalised vehicles, causing damage worth around Tk1.42 crore and stealing goods worth Tk1.50 crore, according to the complaint.
Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, an official of the project, filed the case with Cantonment Police Station.
The case names 13 people as accused and includes another 150 to 200 unidentified individuals.
