The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has fined 39 businesses a total of Tk426,500 for various irregularities during nationwide drives to ensure the sale of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders at government-fixed prices.
The drives were conducted simultaneously by 23 teams of the directorate in Dhaka city and 16 districts today (3 October), targeting LPG cylinder dealers, wholesalers and retailers, reads a press release.
According to the directorate, the special monitoring campaign aimed to ensure a normal supply of LPG cylinders, prevent overpricing and maintain stability in the prices of essential commodities.
During the drives, the teams inspected whether businesses displayed price lists, maintained and provided purchase and sales receipts, complied with cylinder safety regulations and refrained from selling expired cylinders.
Traders were also instructed not to create artificial shortages, stockpile cylinders unreasonably or obstruct supply.
The authorities warned them to display updated price lists in visible places and sell LPG cylinders at government-fixed prices.
The directorate advised consumers to check the weight, seal, expiry date and any visible defects before purchasing LPG cylinders.
Consumers were also urged to verify displayed prices and collect receipts or vouchers for their purchases.
Consumers can report irregularities in LPG cylinder sales, including overcharging, by calling the DNCRP hotline at 16121.
The directorate said such drives would continue to maintain market discipline, protect consumer rights and ensure the sale of LPG cylinders at government-fixed prices.
