The 16 MPa high-pressure test of the Pressure Operated Relief Valve (PORV/POSV) of Unit-1 at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant was successfully completed yesterday morning (30 September) marking a key milestone in the unit’s commissioning.
The test began on the night of 29 September, and was conducted from both the Main Control Room (MCR) and the Emergency Control Room (ECR), according to the Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL).
Engineers verified the functional performance of the control valves and, following their satisfactory operation, also confirmed the performance and response of the associated Main Safety Valves (MSVs).
Valve response, opening and closing performance, alarms and relevant process parameters were closely monitored during the exercise.
Officials said the test was conducted strictly in line with approved procedures and required safety conditions. Communication systems, fire safety and radiation protection measures were checked before and during the operation.
The successful completion of the PORV test marks an important step in the commissioning process, as the system plays a critical role in maintaining safe pressure conditions in the reactor’s primary circuit.
Safety remains the top priority throughout commissioning, officials said, adding that each test is conducted only after all necessary preparations, approvals, briefings and safety requirements are in place.
“There will be no compromise on safety for the sake of schedule,” NPCBL officials said.
The next phase of testing, at around 18 MPa pressure, is expected to be conducted shortly, with the commissioning team proceeding step by step and verifying each stage before moving forward.
