A Barishal court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his father 16 years ago, after the victim was found bound and injured in a paddy field and later died in hospital.
Senior District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Sohel Ahmed handed down the verdict today (30 September), sentencing the son Palash Hawladar to life imprisonment and fining him Tk50,000, in absentia.
In default, he will serve an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.
The court issued an arrest warrant against him, said court bench assistant Mohammad Tuhin Molla.
The court acquitted the other two accused, Kawsar Hawladar and Mizan Hawladar, as the charges against them could not be proved.
According to the case documents, Palash, son of Ali Akbar Hawladar of Parmananda Saha village in Wazirpur upazila, had a heated argument with his father over a family dispute on the evening of 2 May 2010.
Later that night, Palash and four to five unidentified people allegedly called the sleeping Ali Akbar out of his home.
The next morning, neighbour Alamgir Hawladar found Ali Akbar in a nearby paddy field with his hands and legs tied with rope and his eyes and mouth covered with a cloth.
Family members rescued him and first took him to Wazirpur Upazila Health Complex before transferring him to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal, where he died while undergoing treatment.
According to the case statement filed by Ali Akbar’s other son and complainant Shahid Hawladar, Palash had been angry with his father after he opposed Palash’s plan to bring his second wife to the family home.
Palash had also previously served jail time in a case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act over allegations that he failed to provide maintenance to his first wife. He allegedly believed his father had encouraged that case.
After a lengthy investigation, then Wazirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sukumar Roy submitted a charge sheet against three people on 25 March 2011.
Following a prolonged trial and testimony from multiple witnesses, the court delivered the verdict today.
