The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) will start disbursing Tk37.60 crore from its investor protection fund to 17,332 investors affected by the defaults of five brokerage firms from 28 September.
DSE Chairman Maminul Islam announced the decision at a press conference today (22 September) at the DSE Tower in Nikunja, Dhaka.
The affected investors are clients of five brokerage houses — Moshihor Securities, Tamha Securities, Crest Securities, Shah Mohammad Sagir & Co Ltd and Banco Securities.
The DSE said the firms had siphoned off more than Tk250 crore in investor funds.
Each affected investor will receive a maximum of Tk5 lakh against their validated claims, Maminul Islam said.
“The full disbursement process will take slightly over two months to complete,” he said.
The DSE chairman said the bourse had strengthened its regulatory oversight and monitoring mechanisms to prevent brokerage firms from defaulting in the future.
He said the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating four cases involving the siphoning off of investor funds by the brokerage firms.
Another case is pending in court.
