MP Gazi Nazrul’s second wife Mariam buried in Gabura

Mariam Khatun, the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, was buried at her family graveyard in Gabura of Shyamnagar upazila, Satkhira, early today (22 September).

Her body reached Gabura from Dhaka around midnight yesterday. After the ritual bathing and funeral prayers, she was buried at around 12:45am at the family graveyard, according to UNB.

The body was taken by ambulance from Dhaka to Kashirhatkhola in Koyra, Khulna, and then transported by trawler along the river route to her family home in Gabura at around 11:30pm, UNB reported.

Police and local residents assisted the family in completing the funeral arrangements. Family members, villagers and police personnel were present at the burial.

Mariam, 19, was found dead at a flat in the National Parliament Members’ Residential Complex, commonly known as NAM Bhaban, in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Sunday evening (20 September).

Police recovered her body from the flat and sent it for autopsy.

Her father, SM Masum Billah, later filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station accusing Gazi Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda Begum and Mariam’s maternal uncle Md Obaidur Rahman of abetting her suicide.

Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda were subsequently placed on remand by a Dhaka court. The court granted four days’ remand for the lawmaker and one day for Maksuda in the case.

The allegations against the accused have not been established in court, and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Mariam’s death.

Gazi Nazrul was elected MP from the Satkhira-4 constituency in the 13th parliamentary election on a Jamaat-e-Islami nomination. Jamaat later expelled him from the party following controversy over a video involving him and Mariam, whom he subsequently identified as his second wife.
