Police have detained three youths for questioning over the murder of 13-year-old Yashat Shahriar Apratim, including one who was seen with him on CCTV footage at the Comilla University campus.
Mohammad Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Comilla Sadar Dakshin Police Station, confirmed the matter to The Business Standard this evening (19 September).
The detainees are Tuhin, Anas and Fahim.
“Tuhin was arrested at around 3:30pm today. CCTV footage showed Tuhin with Apratim in the Comilla University campus area, where they stayed for about an hour,” the OC said.
Anas was detained around 7pm, while Fahim was picked up approximately half an hour later, he said.
“The suspects Tuhin, Anas and Fahim have been detained for questioning. Our drive is currently ongoing,” he added.
Apratim, the only son of Comilla University Bangla Department Associate Professor Dr Nahida Begum and KM Firoz Shahriar, was a seventh-grader at Border Guard Public School.
He went missing yesterday afternoon after leaving his home in Kotbari around 3:30pm with his mother’s iPhone to take photos with friends after Jummah prayers.
His family searched for him, and his father filed a general diary at Sadar South Police Station that evening. Police also reviewed CCTV footage from his last known location and surrounding areas of Comilla University.
Apratim’s body was recovered around noon today from a wooded area in Lalmai Sananda Pahar in Kotbari, near the university. Police said he had severe injuries to his head.
The body was sent to the morgue of Cumilla Medical College Hospital.
