‘Tawhidi Janata’ demands cancellation of another boat race in Sylhet

A group identifying itself as ‘Tawhidi Janata’ has demanded the cancellation of a boat race scheduled for this afternoon (19 September) on the Kushiara River in Sylhet’s Golapganj.

Yesterday afternoon, after Jummah prayers, the group held a protest rally and demonstration at Mirganj Bazar, with teachers and students of local Qawmi madrasahs reportedly taking part.

The protesters demanded that the boat race be stopped, citing riverbank erosion and what they described as un-Islamic activities, including music and singing, during such events.

Following the rally, a gathering moderated by Abbas Al Mahmud was held at Mirganj Bazar. Speakers included Al Ihsan Parishad President Hifzur Rahman, Al Hera Academy President Sayef Uddin, Jamia Islamia Hafizia Madrasah Principal Zakaria, Maulana Abu Sufian, among others.

Speakers claimed that the boat race, jointly organised by residents of several villages on the Kushiara River, contributes to riverbank erosion.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rafiqul Islam said the administration held discussions with those who took part in the rally.

He said the protesters demanded that the administration remain vigilant to prevent obscene music, singing and gambling around the race.

“Boat racing is a Bengali tradition and a part of our culture. It will not be allowed to be stopped. If Bengali culture is stopped, foreign culture will consume us. Therefore, as part of Bengali culture, the boat race will take place. It will take place in a festive atmosphere,” he said.

Last month, a group of people identifying as “Tawhidi Janata” had also protested a boat race on the Sunai River in Sylhet’s Beanibazar, demanding its cancellation.

Despite the objections, the race took place on 28 August with the cooperation of the administration, drawing thousands of spectators.
