A clash broke out between students of the Clinical Psychology and History departments of Rajshahi University (RU) over an inter-departmental football match, leaving six students injured, including one with serious head injuries.
The incident took place at the university stadium this afternoon (17 September).
The critically injured student was identified as Abu Suaib Mohammad Jim, a 2019-20 academic year student of the History Department. He was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) with serious head injuries.
The other five injured students received treatment at the university medical centre.
Jahan Ara Soheli, senior medical officer at the RU medical centre, said, “Five students received treatment here following the clash. None of them had serious injuries. They were given primary treatment.”
Mahbubur Rahman of the university proctor’s office said, “One student was sent to RMCH in critical condition after sustaining a head injury during the clash. The situation is currently calm. We are discussing the matter with the heads of the two departments and trying to resolve it.”

Following the victory, the Clinical Psychology goalkeeper allegedly made obscene gestures and engaged in sledging towards History Department students sitting in the gallery. The History goalkeeper tried to intervene, triggering an altercation between players from the two teams. The History goalkeeper was injured during the ensuing scuffle.
Roksana Begum Tuktuki, acting director of the Department of Physical Education and Sports, said, “The match was going smoothly from the beginning. After History Department won the penalty shootout, an altercation and tension broke out. I went to the scene and tried to control the situation. I did not see the History Department student sustaining a head injury, but I learned about it later.”
