Three roads in Rangamati district will be widened and upgraded under a project approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec), improving district highways in the Chattogram road zone.
The project was among 12 approved at a Wednesday meeting chaired by Prime Minister and Ecnec Chairperson Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat’s Cabinet Room on 16 September.
The approvals comprised seven new and five revised projects, including schemes to upgrade district highways in the Rajshahi and Chattogram road zones to appropriate standards and widths.
The Chattogram road zone project will run from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2030.
According to Roads and Highways Department sources, the project includes 16 sub-projects, three of them in Rangamati district.
The estimated cost of upgrading approximately 19 kilometres of the Bangalhalia-Rajasthali road in Rajasthali upazila is Tk77.42 crore. The six-kilometre Ranirhat-Kaukhali road will be upgraded at an estimated cost of Tk41.77 crore, while the Baghaihat-Marishya road is estimated at Tk121.76 crore.
Officials involved in the project said widening and upgrading the three roads would strengthen Rangamati’s road network and reduce travel time. They also said road beautification work could help attract more tourists to the district.
Rangamati Road Division Executive Engineer Sabuj Chakma said the Bangalhalia-Rajasthali and Ranirhat-Kaukhali roads, which fall under his division, would be widened from 12 feet to 18 feet.
The Baghaihat-Marishya road, under the Khagrachari Road Division, would also be widened from 12 feet to 18 feet, he said.
Chakma said completing the widening and upgrading work to the required standards would improve the roads’ durability and provide safer, uninterrupted and more cost-effective transport in Rangamati.
