31 AL leaders, activists arrested in Munshiganj over flash procession attempt, 3 microbuses seized

Police have arrested 31 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League in Munshiganj while they were allegedly preparing to stage a flash procession on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway and other major roads in the district.

Police have also seized three Hiace microbuses and political campaign materials.

Acting on intelligence that Awami League members might stage a sudden procession on the expressway or other key roads, Munshiganj district police launched a special checking operation across all police station areas from midnight to early morning today (15 September).

At around 1:20am, police from Munshiganj Sadar Police Station arrested 10 Awami League members and seized a Hiace microbus from a checkpoint in front of President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed Residential Model School and College, according to police sources.

Around 25 minutes later, police from Hatimara Investigation Centre stopped another Hiace microbus at a checkpoint at Hatimara intersection and arrested 11 more Awami League leaders and activists.

At around 2am, Srinagar police arrested another 10 Awami League members and seized a third Hiace microbus during a search at a checkpoint near Chanbari bus stand.

Police said masks used to cover faces and various political materials, including campaign items bearing the slogan “Vote for the boat”, were recovered from the vehicles.

Munshiganj district police said legal proceedings against those arrested were underway.

The special operation and surveillance would continue to maintain law and order in the district, police added.
