Politicians’ job is to give speeches, while government officials’ job is to “steal and work”, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo said today (15 September).
“But we want society to change in line with current technology so that our children can lead meaningful lives in the future,” he said.
The minister made the remarks while addressing a discussion on law and order, anti-corruption, drug control and development activities at the deputy commissioner’s office in Lakshmipur in the afternoon.
Addressing government officials on corruption, Mintoo said they had been entrusted with the responsibility of developing the country and society, including socioeconomic development and preventing corruption.
“I don’t know who commits corruption. But corruption exists in our society. If I commit corruption, I will do it through you [government officials]. Suppose I take money from a contractor, I will take it through you,” he said.
He urged officials to continue working to prevent corruption, saying corruption would always exist to some extent, but reducing it should remain a key responsibility.
“Corruption prevention is our main responsibility,” he said.
