Ex-deputy governor SK Sur’s wife sentenced to two years in corruption case

A Dhaka court has sentenced Suparna Sur Chowdhury, wife of former Bangladesh Bank deputy governor Sitangshu Kumar (SK) Sur, to two years in prison in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for failing to submit an asset statement.

Judge Md Robiul Islam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-10 delivered the verdict today (15 September).

The court also fined her Tk1 lakh, with a further three months in prison if she fails to pay the fine, ACC prosecutor Shah Md Nazmus Sakib confirmed.

Suparna was brought to court from jail before the verdict was delivered. Following the ruling, she was sent back to prison with a warrant for her imprisonment.

After the verdict, defence lawyer Tapas Chandra Das expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling and said they would appeal to the High Court.

“We hope she will receive justice from the High Court,” he said.

According to the case documents, an order was issued requiring Suparna to submit a detailed statement of all movable and immovable assets, liabilities, sources of income and details of how those assets were acquired, including assets held in her own name or in the names of her husband, SK Sur, and his dependants, either directly or through nominees.

She received the asset declaration form, along with the order to submit the statement, on 27 October 2024 and signed for it herself.

However, she failed to submit the statement within the stipulated 21 working days.

ACC Deputy Director Nazmul Hossain filed the case against her on 23 December 2024 under Section 26(2) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.

Following the completion of the investigation, ACC Assistant Deputy Director and investigation officer AM Taher submitted a charge sheet against Suparna on 29 June 2025.

On 3 February this year, the court framed charges against her and ordered the trial to begin. During the trial, the court recorded the testimony of five witnesses.
