RSGT Bangladesh records 58 moves per hour at Patenga terminal

RSGT Bangladesh has recorded up to 58 container moves and 82 TEUs per hour while handling a CMA CGM vessel at Patenga Container Terminal, setting what the company described as a new productivity benchmark for Bangladesh’s port sector.

The productivity was achieved while handling MV WANEN on Thursday (10 September) during the terminal’s first gearless vessel operation using newly commissioned Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, according to RSGT Bangladesh.

The company said the figure is nearly double the historical productivity level at Chattogram Port, where container vessels have traditionally averaged around 30 moves or 48 TEUs per hour.

The milestone comes as the operator seeks to improve the efficiency of Patenga Container Terminal through modern equipment and international terminal operating practices.

RSGT Bangladesh said higher productivity could reduce vessel turnaround time, improve berth utilisation and lower vessel-related costs, while improving efficiency across the country’s maritime supply chain.

“Reaching 58 moves / 82 TEUs per hour is more than a productivity achievement – it demonstrates the potential of modern port operations in Bangladesh,” Erwin Haaze, chief executive officer of RSGT Bangladesh, said in a statement.

He said the milestone reflected a combination of technology, international experience, disciplined operations and a skilled workforce.

“We remain committed to continuously raising operational standards and delivering safe, efficient, and reliable services to our customers and stakeholders,” Haaze said.

The company said deployment of the new STS cranes was central to the productivity gains recorded during the operation.

Unlike geared vessels, gearless container ships depend on shore-based cranes for cargo handling. The new equipment is expected to allow the terminal to handle larger container volumes more efficiently and reduce dependence on vessel-mounted cargo-handling gear.

RSGT Bangladesh said the milestone reinforced its plan to develop Patenga Container Terminal as a more efficient and globally connected maritime gateway.

The company said it would continue investing in infrastructure, technology, operational practices and workforce development to support Bangladesh’s growing trade.

Patenga Container Terminal, operated by RSGT Bangladesh, is one of the country’s newer container-handling facilities and is part of efforts to expand capacity and improve operational efficiency at Chattogram Port, the country’s main seaport.

The latest productivity figure was achieved during a specific vessel operation and should not necessarily be considered the terminal’s sustained average performance.
