The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested a named accused in the murder of a mason in the capital’s Gandaria area, allegedly stemming from a previous dispute.
Gias Uddin alias Gesu, 34, was arrested during a raid in Matuail area of Jatrabari around 3:30am today (11 September), Tapan Sarker, assistant director (media) of RAB-10, said.
According to the RAB official, Gias had been absconding since the murder of Abdul Mannan and was arrested with the help of information technology.
Gias was later handed over to Gandaria Police Station for further legal action.
Mannan, a mason, was stabbed to death in the Mir Hazaribagh area of Gandaria on 7 June.
According to police and RAB, Mannan had an argument with his friend Mohammad Rajon Dewan Suman alias Bagha, 27, over a personal matter about a week before Eid-ul-Adha.
On the day of the incident, Mannan was on his way to his mess for lunch when he saw Rajon and several others allegedly assaulting a mentally challenged man.
When Mannan intervened, an argument and scuffle broke out between the two groups.
At one point, Rajon allegedly attacked Mannan with a sharp knife, leaving him critically injured.
Mannan was taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Mannan’s sister filed a murder case with Gandaria Police Station the same day, naming Rajon as the prime accused.
RAB later arrested Rajon from South Keraniganj the following day.
