Eric Idle got candid about Tim Curry.
As the late Rocky Horror star died in late August due to a heart stroke, now his decades-old friend, Eric Idle recalled Tim’s positive attitude and their friendship in an interview with People Magazine, stating, “He was a very nice man, and he took the stroke very well.”
Eric added, “I don’t know how long we’ve known Tim. We knew Tim back in England for the longest time.”
He further revealed that the two celebrity pals met around the era of Rocky Horror which began in London, in 1973.
It is worth noting here that the duo later collaborated for a musical classic, Spamalot, in which Tim portrayed the character of King Arthur while Eric served as a creator and the acclaimed composer John Du Prez also joined as a composer.
Reflecting on the time, Eric revealed that “He was an extraordinary performer. He was always our first choice, John Du Prez and I, for our first King Arthur [in Spamalot].”
Adding, “He was always happy to come and sing songs for us that we were demoing for Spamalot.”
Speaking about Tim’s generosity and how Eric introduced him to the Beatles’ legendary guitarist, George Harrison, “We were writing a musical for about 20 years, and he would always come along and sing. He was very generous with his time and enthusiastic and supportive … He was a gardener, too, so I had great happiness in introducing George Harrison to him, because he was a gardener as well,” Spamalot’s creator revealed.
Eric further revealed that he is planning to honor Tim at his upcoming New York City memoir event, Idle in Provence, by playing a song featuring his late friend’s vocals.
Stating, “I was just playing a song of mine [Curry] was singing called ‘Life Will Get You in the End.’ ”
“I’d like to play that with Tim singing ‘Life Will Get You in the End.’ He’s talking about death, and he talks about it. You come screaming into the world, no need to go screaming out. Have a nice fine Bordeaux — it’s all wonderful advice for preparing to leave. I love that he did it that way. So I’d like to share it with the audience in New York, because I think it’s lovely,” the actor and comedian added.
For those unaware, Eric Idle’s memoir event will be held in New York City on September 29.
