At least 25 people were injured as two groups clashed over a football match in Brahmanbaria’s Sarail Upazila on Wednesday evening (9 September), during which they were seen throwing brickbats at each other using torchlight.
According to police and local sources, the clash stemmed from an incident earlier in the day when Lamin, a teenager from neighbouring Natun Habli Para, went to Swalpa Noagaon School playground to watch a football match and got into an argument with another teenager, identified as Shuvo, from Swalpa Noagaon village.
The argument led to a scuffle and, at one point, Shuvo allegedly beat Lamin.
Later around 7pm in the evening, two groups of people from the two areas armed with local weapons clashed.
People from both groups were seen using torchlights to locate rivals and throw brickbats at each other during the clash, police and locals said.
The district’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Obaidur Rahman said police went to the spot and were trying to bring the situation under control.
The clash came under control around 10:30pm, reports our correspondent.
