Bangladesh has begun formulating its second five-year National Action Plan (NAP) on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today (6 September).
The process began with a two-day national workshop jointly organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UN Women Bangladesh at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam, who inaugurated the workshop, said the government remains committed to advancing the WPS agenda and called for an “inclusive, realistic and measurable” second NAP.
She said the government is reviewing the country’s first NAP, which covered 2019–2025, with support from UN Women.
The workshop aims to gather input from members of the Inter-Ministerial Coordination Group and civil society organisations to develop a WPS framework responsive to changing national, regional and global contexts.
Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs Dr Rowsan Ara Begum said the new NAP should be well designed, adequately financed and effectively coordinated.
UN Women Representative in Bangladesh Gitanjali Singh stressed the need for effective implementation, women’s leadership and participation, measurable results and accountability in the new plan.
The workshop, titled “Developing Bangladesh’s New-Generation National Action Plan on WPS”, will conclude tomorrow (7 September).
