Body recovered from remote stream near Hamham Waterfall

An unidentified body was recovered from a remote stream near Hamham Waterfall in Moulvibazar early today (4 September).

Rescuers recovered the body from the Sitab stream in Kamalganj upazila following an overnight operation involving the Forest Department, police, Fire Service and Civil Defence, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Confirming the recovery, Kamalganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Komor Uddin said the identity of the deceased could not be established immediately. The person is believed to have been aged between 55 and 60.

“The body has been taken to the police station, and necessary steps are being taken,” he said.

After completing legal formalities, the body will be sent for a post-mortem examination, the OC said, adding that the cause of death would be determined based on the investigation and autopsy report.

According to locals, several fishermen spotted a body floating in a waterbody near Mokam Tila in the Hamham tourist area, deep inside the Rajkandi Reserved Forest, yesterday afternoon.

They informed the local administration, following which members of the Forest Department, Kamalganj Police Station, Fire Service and Civil Defence, and BGB launched a joint recovery operation.

As the hilly area is inaccessible to vehicles, rescuers had to walk a long distance to reach the spot. After several hours of effort, they recovered the body and carried it along hilly trails to a nearby locality.

Rescuers said the body appeared to have been in the water for several days.

Locals suspect that recent hill floods and strong currents may have carried the body from an upstream area before it became trapped in the Sitab stream.

Police, however, said the circumstances surrounding the death could not be confirmed without an investigation.
