Agriculture Minister Amin Ur Rashid offered to clean the toilets himself during an inspection of Cumilla Medical College Hospital on Tuesday (1 September), after finding the bathrooms in a deplorable state.
“Bring me Harpic – I will clean it myself. If I can do it, I will ask you why you could not,” he said during the inspection, according to a video of the visit that surfaced on social media today (3 September).
The minister, who chairs the hospital’s management committee, visited the facility after a committee meeting to inspect patient services. Finding the toilets in a deplorable state, he told acting hospital director Md Shahajahan that he would clean them himself.
He also pointed out black stains on the floor tiles and noted that five of the six bathrooms on each floor were locked.
“The bathrooms are in a terrible state. At least keep the bathrooms in order. I want it clean right now,” he said.
The minister also directed the acting director to immediately repair ceiling fans that had been out of order for an extended period.
Acting Director Shahajahan told The Business Standard that the Public Works Department had been asked to repair the toilets urgently.
He also said 11 government employees and 63 outsourced workers are responsible for cleaning the hospital.
“Strict instructions have been given to all of them,” he said.
