Robbery at gunpoint: 3 arrested with firearm, ammunition

Police have arrested three people in connection with the alleged robbery of Tk38 lakh at gunpoint in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.

A locally made revolver and four rounds of ammunition were recovered from one of the arrestees, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) press release issued today (31 August).

The arrested are Tanvir Abedin alias Jui, 41, Md Mujibur Rahman, 60, and Md Zakir Hossain alias Captain Zakir, 60.

The incident took place around 2:15pm yesterday (30 August) in front of Dingi Restaurant on Road 12 in Dhanmondi, the DMP Media and Public Relations Department said.

According to police, a gang of 8–10 people intercepted Md Khorshed Alam, 50, and allegedly snatched Tk38 lakh from him at gunpoint before attempting to flee.

Dhanmondi Model Police Station officers and local residents chased the suspects and detained Tanvir and Mujibur, police said.

A search of Tanvir’s body led to the recovery of a locally made revolver and four rounds of ammunition, according to the DMP.

Police later questioned Mujibur and, based on information obtained from him, conducted an operation in the capital’s Dakshinkhan area, where they arrested Zakir.

Police said the victim was carrying the money when several motorcycle riders approached him. During the ensuing chase, one of the suspects reportedly fell from a motorcycle and was detained with the help of local residents.

The police and Detective Branch later conducted further operations and arrested two more suspects, the DMP said.

Police have found evidence of the involvement of an 8–10-member group in the robbery and are investigating whether anyone else was involved.

They are also conducting raids to recover the remaining stolen money and locate other weapons and vehicles allegedly used in the robbery.

Two separate cases have been filed with Dhanmondi Model Police Station over the robbery and recovery of the firearm.

The three arrestees have been sent to court.

DMP Deputy Commissioner Md Akter Hossain said the incident was being investigated as a priority.

Police are working to identify and arrest other members of the alleged robbery gang based on information obtained from the arrestees, while efforts are also underway to recover the stolen money and gather evidence regarding the weapons and other items used in the incident, he said.
