Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that no corruption occurred during the distribution of relief following the recent floods, describing the transparency in post-flood relief operations as a major success for the government.
He made the remarks at the opening ceremony of HSBC’s Tk10 crore humanitarian assistance project for the sustainable rehabilitation of flood-affected people, held at the Chattogram Circuit House today (30 August).
The minister stated that during the initial stage of the floods, the government carried out all necessary emergency work. Subsequent rehabilitation and recovery efforts are being conducted through partnerships with the private sector and development organisations, which he noted helps reduce corruption, irregularities, and waste.
Chowdhury emphasised that government’s initiatives, including the Family Card programme, have not been politicised and will remain free of political influence.
He added that the presence of oversight and “watchdog” mechanisms within the delivery system makes it possible to reduce corruption and the misuse of public funds.
The government intends to partner with the private sector and development agencies in all necessary areas, extending from post-flood rehabilitation to Family Card distribution and the creative economy, said the minister.
Implemented with funding from HSBC and in collaboration with Brac, the seven-month disaster management programme will cover approximately 12,000 affected families across Ward 38 of Chattogram City Corporation, as well as Satkania, Banshkhali, and Chakaria.
Under the project, 250 families will receive housing repairs and rehabilitation, 400 families will get new latrines, 30 tube wells will be repaired, 300 families will receive assets and equipment for livelihood recovery, and 600 farming families will receive agricultural inputs.
Additionally, educational materials will be distributed to 10,000 students.
The event was attended by Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Ziauddin, District Commissioner Zahidul Islam Miah, Bangladesh Bank Director (Chattogram Office) Swarup Kumar Chowdhury, and HSBC Bangladesh Chief Executive Officer Md Mahbub ur Rahman.
