Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid has said Bangladesh has sufficient fertiliser stocks and no shortage, but some miscreants are attempting to create an artificial crisis.
“There is no shortage of fertiliser in the country. Some miscreants are creating a crisis. Despite adequate stocks, attempts to create an artificial shortage will not be tolerated,” he said at a meeting with officials of the Agriculture Ministry and the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at the Faridpur deputy commissioner’s office today (29 August).
The minister said the government was working to ensure the timely distribution of fertiliser and other agricultural inputs according to farmers’ needs.
He said Bangladesh would eventually move from being an importer of agricultural products to an exporter.
Faridpur has significant potential for indigenous fish production, he said, urging farmers to adopt planned and scientific methods of fish cultivation to make the most of the sector’s potential.
Aminur Rashid also said Faridpur’s soil was highly suitable for cultivation, allowing farmers to achieve good yields with comparatively less fertiliser than in many other parts of the country.
He said the favourable soil conditions had contributed to the district’s strong production of onions and jute.
Later, the minister attended a meeting with onion and jute farmers at the Faridpur Sadar upazila hallroom, where various issues concerning farmers and the district’s agriculture sector were discussed.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam, lawmakers Nayab Yusuf Ahmed, Shahidul Islam Babul and Md Elias Molla also spoke at the meeting.
Director General of the Department of Agricultural Extension Md Abdur Rahim, Faridpur District Council administrator Md Afzal Hossain Khan Palash, Additional Superintendent of Police Fatema Islam and officials from relevant departments were present.
Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Md Mazharul Islam chaired the meeting.
